Ride across the river

When the Dutch travellers and expeditions came to rivers they could not cross, they would build floats to get themselves and all their paraphernalia across.  These then led to the more ‘official’ pontoons used to transport people, livestock and grain. There were many pontoons in use in the Cape during the 1800s, such as the one at Palmiet River and one for crossing the Sonderend River between Stormsvlei and Swellendam. Abraham de Haan built the first pontoon in the 18th century and local farmers contributed to the upkeep of this pontoon, which was in use for at least a hundred years.

Tread lightly

On Friday, 03 February, I made my way to the Kogelberg Nature Reserve an hour and half from Cape Town. You can take the road over Sir Lowry’s Pass or opt for the more scenic route round the coast through Gordon’s Bay, Pringle Bay, Rooiels and Betty’s Bay. Not far from the popular Harold Porter Gardens, you’ll find the sign to the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. A dirt track leads to the parking area of the reserve’s brand new cabins.
